I was watching TV and bumped into this pretty cool group called Sapeurs. I was amazed, I was speechless\u2026. look at how cool they are, seriously. They are in Congo, where the sun is so close and boiling hot, but dress themselves in high-end suits and setups all the time. Their love and passion and devotion for fashion is absolutely incredible. Of course they have perfect fashion sense but also, what they believe fashion can do is so on-point that I wanted to share it with those of you who couldn’t watch it on TV.<\/p>\n

Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world, it is hot and the political situation here is very unstable that people have the image of war or conflict towards Congo. But look at these people dressed so fashionable and luxuriously. They don’t get paid well, in fact, many of them are just a normal taxi driver or construction workers, but they use up more than half of their salaries for clothes. You might think that is so not understandable and idiotic. Why spend money you need not for your living, but instead for expensive clothes, you might think. But they have strong faith and belief in what fashion can do to change the country. They are mainly inspired by 50~60s paris fashion (since Congo was colonized by France, they have collusive relationship), and their motto is to wear bright colorful clothes (their rule is not to put more than 4 colors in one outfit, but having \u00a03 colors is the best outfit) in a mode, elegant style. This movement, or this group first started by the belief of “disarm yourself, and live with elegance”. They believed fashion will make people more elegant and that will lead to peaceful society. It began many many MANY years ago, but they still exist which means that they have been passing this belief and motto over and over to the younger generations continuously. Fashion is what they truly believe has influence on people in a positive way, it’s what they lean on through the tough environment, it’s what they enjoy, it’s what they believe will\u00a0free people from violence. It’s not only that they enjoy, but is enjoying others who are watching the Sapeurs and bringing them courage and happiness. They aren7t wearing expensive coutures just to consume. They are doing this to enhance their heart, what they really want and embodying it through fashion, is what I thought as I watched it on TV.<\/p>\n

Fashion is freedom. What people believe in fashion differs, and it’s suppose to be that way. We can enjoy fashion, no matter what our reasons are. This is why I can’t stop fashion!<\/p>\n

Lastly, this picture below, is one of my favorites. Sapeurs do this pose to show people what the brand of the jacket is to others, but after hearing why they wear high-end clothes,\u00a0it seemed\u00a0to me like he is saying ” I am disarmed. I have nothing that will hurt people”.<\/p>\n
