Have you heard a word of Fair trade? I’ve hearing the word sometimes from somewhere but never really knew what it is. A while ago, of my the friends recommended me a documentary ‘The True Cost’ . and the movie made me started to thinking about fashion and social issues.
After you actually started to thinking of the such low price clothes by fast fashion company, it’s just too cheap. Prices of commodities are low in developing country but still too cheap. The movie is easy to watch even if you’ve never watched this kind of documentaries. You can understand disadvantages of fast fashion and also what fair trade is.
However there are disadvantages of fair trade like all other things do.
“How is it that our favourite brands can import billions of pounds’ worth of goods from the developing world every year, and yet leave the people who produce them barely scraping a living? Is it that big business is incompatible with the eradication of poverty? And, if so, are charity and fair trade initiatives the only way forward?” (Unfair Trade)
Unfair Trade: The Shocking Truth Behind ‘Ethical’ Business by Conor Woodman talks about dis advantages of fair trade. I don’t read this book yet, but looks interesting.
As I know there are advantages and disadvantages (of course i only know it a little tho) I would like to support fair trade company. I will research more which companies are good or not. Beside the workers’ problems, I want to stop buying cheap clothes and jut throwing away when I get bored. I love clothes, I love fashion so I want to take more seriously with my clothes. To be honest my impression of fair trade clothes are not good, or it’s just my style. I like H&M or Zara styles of looks. But People Tree has lot pretty clothes(i personally prefer people tree uk than japan)
