村上隆の「五百羅漢図展」へ！今年1発目に必ず行っておきたい素晴らしい展覧会。#takashimurakami #art

今年もどうぞよろしくお願い致します！

ということで今年1発目のブログは・・・

日本が生んだ世界的現代芸術家、村上隆氏の大型展覧会レポート。

2016年の数ある抱負の中の一つが、「色々なジャンルの展覧会へ足を運ぶこと」なのだ！

村上隆さんの絵を初めて知ったのは、中学生のときにドイツで買ったKanye WestのGraduationというアルバムのジャケットを見て。

My first blog of this year is going to be about an art exhibition I visited this week. “Takashi Murakami: The 500 Arhats”. One of my many aspirations of 2016 is to go to many art exhibitions, so I decided to go to this one to get myself started. I remember I was only a junior high student when I first saw Takashi Murakami’s work on Kanye West’s album called “Graduation”. Yes I was Yeezus fan since I was 14:P

くまちゃんも可愛いし、色使いがビビッドで、すごく独特な世界観があるイラストだなって思った。キュートなんだけど、どこか毒々しくて、ポップなんだけど、どこかシニカル。

一度見たら忘れないほど印象的！

最近ではLouis VuittonとのコラボレーションやShu Uemura とのコラボレーションもしていたから、ナイロニスタのみんなも絶対知ってるはず。

I loved his cute bear character, and how the colors and so vivid and pop in all of his work, but has a cynical, dark and black atmosphere. It’s so impressive that you wouldn’t be able to forget his work after you’ve seen it once. He has done many collabs recently, such as Louis Vuitton and Shu Uemura. Many of you Nylonistas must have seen them before.

村上隆氏のプロフィールについて少しだけ触れると、

1962年に東京で生まれて、東京藝術大学日本画科の博士課程在学中に芸術家としてデビューを果たしている。今回の展覧会で上映されていた村上氏のドキュメンタリーショートムービーでは、日本画科を選んだ理由について、「簡単そうだったから」と言っていた。彼はアニメや漫画を主題とした絵や、等身大のアニメのフィギュアを制作したり、上でも述べたような企業ブランドとのコラボレーション、それこそ映画の制作などを網羅する、世界中で活躍しているアーティスト。現在53歳。

この五百羅漢図展では、そんな村上氏の最新作をたくさん展示しているのだ。過去と現在、東洋と西洋の融合を表現し、日本の伝統や「美」の村上氏独自の解釈が見られる。

美術館を入ると、まず見られるのは「円相」シリーズ。円相とは、悟り、心理、仏性、そして宇宙全体を象徴的に表す画のこと。

Let’s talk a little bit about Takashi Murakami himself. He was born in 1962 in Tokyo, went to a number one art school in Japan called Tokyo University of the Arts, Traditional Japanese Art department. He has been producing arts in the theme of Animation and Manga, like making a real sized Anime figure. He is 53 years old now. In this exhibition “The 500 Arhats”, he is revealing his latest art pieces depicting the past and present, Orient and Occident, and Japan’s traditional beauty. Stepping inside the exhibition, first you can see his Enso series. Enso is a painting that expresses comprehension, psychology, Buddha-nature and the universe.

完成した絵にHOLLOW（空洞・虚）という文字をグラフィティーのように表現。これも円相画。

This is my favorite enso piece. It is hard to see it in the photo, but there are many skulls drawn on the white canvas here and on top of that the word HOLLOW is painted like a graffiti.

この円相画の反対側には、この大きな蜃が。

In front of his enso piece you can see a huge dragon. To be precise, this is not a “dragon” but an animal called “Shin”, which exists in old writings in Japan.

本当に展示作品が多いのだけど、どの作品にも共通するのは「丸」での構成率が高いこと。

細かいディテールを見てみると、丸、丸、丸。

In every piece, I was able to capture many circles. If you look at the details closely, many of the backgrounds consists of small dots and circles which is amazing because if you look from a distance, it blends in.

ネイルかわいい・・・

とにかくこうやってディテールが半端なく凝っているのが村上氏の絵。

一枚の絵をみるのにま〜〜〜〜時間を費やさなければいけない。というか、費やしたい。一枚一枚の全てをチェックしたくなる。

I truly enjoyed the details of Takashi Murakami’s work. It takes a massive amount of time to absorb every detail, but it’s worth the time.

《人は、「貧」すると己を「貧」とは評せずに「ヒンヒン」の喘ぐしか無し。》

“When stricken with poverty, one does not deem oneself as impoverished and has no choice but to act the fool and suffer through”

巨大DOB君。

DOB君は、１９９５年のキャラクター文化が盛り上がっている中、村上氏が産み出したキャラクター。インスピレーションは、ど根性ガエルのぴょん吉、ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグなどから得たそう。なぜDOB君というのかというと、コメディアンである由利徹の「おしゃまんべ」というギャグと、漫画「いなかっぺ大将」の「どぼじで、どぼじて」というギャグを組み合わせて作られた造語の頭三文字を取ってDOB。つまり、めちゃくちゃどうでもいい意味のない名前。この意味のなさというのは、村上氏が学生時代に書いた「意味の無意味の意味」という論文からはじまり、彼の作品全てに通ずる動機、そして主題を象徴しているのです。。。深いいいいいい。

あと、上映されているドキュメンタリーショートフィルムでは、「アンディーウォーホルならマリリンや、缶の絵。それと同じように、村上隆＝⚪︎⚪︎、のようなキャラクターを作ったら歴史に残るのだろうかという実験」（一字一句こうは言ってないけどだいたいこんな感じ）という風にDOB君のことを話してた。

Here is a huge piece of Mr.DOB. Mr.DOB is a character created by Takashi Murakami in 1995. He was inspired by many Japanese comic and animation as well as Sonic The Hedge Hog. In the short documentary film played at the exhibition, he talked about Mr.DOB saying “For example, Andy Warhol is symbolized by Marilyn Monroe, and the can drawings. I thought, if I would create my own symbolic character, I would make it into history”.

五百羅漢図は本当に息を飲む大作。

これについては、もうただただ実際に行って、見て欲しい！

実はこれ、一定期間でちゃんと仕上げられるように、村上隆氏自身が「スカウトキャラバン」という名の「学生募集」をしたらしい。そうして美大に通う学生を募り、彼らとともに完成させたのがこの五百羅漢図。その制作過程や、村上氏の直筆指示が書き込まれている資料なども展示されているのだけど、それが本当に面白い。資料ファイルは100冊を超えて、使用したシルクスクリーンは4千枚以上。

そもそも五百羅漢って「仏教で供養尊敬に価する５００人の人々」らしいんだけど、その５００人の羅漢一人一人の服や、表情、肌の色までこだわりがあって、ただ適当に「こいつはこれ」って振り分けているのではなく、資料の知識を加味した上でのものだったりする。それが本当に凄まじいんだ！！！

村上氏が五百羅漢図を描こうと思ったのは、東日本大震災があって、みんなが絶望感の中生きているという現実の中で、作り話であったとしても、希望を唱えるストーリーが必要だと感じたからだそう。五百羅漢は５００種の人の苦しみを癒してくれるという逸話もあるんだって。

The 500 Arhats pieces were…just, so outstanding and amazing that I insist you go see it for yourself. The piece was so huge that Takashi Murakami recruited many art school students in Japan and created this piece together. You can see the process and all the suggestions and checks that he made at the exhibition; the material he used to create this piece are all exhibited in a room as well.

The 500 Arhats all have their own characters, enhanced in their facial expressions, clothes and skin colors. So it wasn’t decided randomly; each of them were researched and thought carefully. It is absolutely amazing. The reason why Takashi Murakami decided to create this piece was because of the Tohoku Earthquake in 2011. Everybody was living in devastation, and for people like that, he thought they needed a story to feel hope, even if it’s a fiction. The 500 Arhats are said to heal 500 different types of suffering, so therefore he had decided to create a piece inspired by them.

結構タイトル見てるだけでも楽しめちゃう。（笑）

展覧会を出た後も、例のショートフィルムが見れたり、お土産ショップがあったり、こんな可愛い村上氏のシンボリックなお花ちゃんのソファーで村上氏の作品ブックを読めたり。もうとにかく最後の最後まで楽しめる展覧会！

Even after you leave the exhibition, you can go and watch the short documentary film about Takashi Murakami, sit on the cutest flower sofa and read Takashi Murakami’s Art Books. Until the very end, there are many fun spots to enjoy yourself.

アート展覧会が苦手っていう人でも、村上隆氏のポップで現代でおかたくないアートならきっと楽しめるはず。

六本木ヒルズ内　森美術館　にて３月６日まで開催されてるので是非行ってみてね。

If you’re the type of person who is reluctant to go to art museums, I think this is one of the most fun and enjoyable exhibition to give you a slice of good impression towards art exhibitions! Students can go in with only 1100 yen so it’s very reasonable considering I stayed there for 2.5 hours. It is held at Roppongi Hills Mori Museum until March 6th so check it out!
